BS EN 10255 Tube a Potted History.

Tube to BS EN 10255:2004 was previously to BS1387:1985 but before that it started life as BS789 in February 1938 which was revised in October 1940 to BS789A as a war emergency update. Then the 1947 revision became BS1387:1947 and was revised in 1957, 1967 and 1985 and remained a British Standard until 2004 when it became one of the latest BS EN standards and since then has been superseded by BS EN 10255:2004-A1:2007. The uses for this type of steel tube have been varied over the decades and you can find tube to BS EN 10255 on pressure systems, handrail systems and storage structures in high street stores. BS EN 10255 Tube  for Pressure Systems

 

Over the decades this grade of steel tube to BS EN 10255 has been known by many other names associated with pressure systems, many of you will recognise Gas List Tube and Steam Tube which are both the same grade of tube, the only difference being wall thickness. The differences between wall thicknesses are still recognised as medium and heavy or by blue band and red band tube as medium wall tube had a blue painted band around the OD and heavy a red painted band. Originally you could by BS EN 10255 tube in three finishes which were black, galvanised and self-colour. Galvanised and self-colour are still available but the black lacquered version has been replaced by red Primered to BS EN 10255:2004.
